Role

Individual

CONCEPT

SOL is a lighting fixture inspired by the cinematic atmosphere in the 2018 movie Burning by Lee Chang-Dong that mimics the natural lighting of a window.

INSPIRATION

Since one of the central locations in the film is a tiny apartment with a single window, I wanted to simulate the atmosphere of natural sunlight because the main characters rely on the sun as a primary light source. The lighting in the film reflects the simple and quiet quality of rural life.

Japanese paper lanterns became a source of inspiration for the piece, as it's tradition and craftsmanship embody the film's rural roots.

TYPOLOGY

The light is meant to be put in a room on the wall of a small room with no windows, possibly a study, in a home to simulate the natural light source from the film. It represents the simple, quiet quality of urban life, and the light is diffused in a way that is not harsh to look at and provides a more calm and relaxed atmosphere.

The wall fixture uses paper in order to create a softer look and mimics the ridges and folds from window curtains. Unlike most paper lanterns, SOL uses white light as opposed to yellow to reflect the mysterious and somber tone of the film.
